What is a Wool&Grant (and how does it get that way)?
A few years ago Bev
Grant (Bev's site) started
showing up at some of the writing workshops I led. She kept
surprising me in song circles before and after the writing.
"Hmmm," I thought to myself. "That song 'In America'
is really good...wish I'd written that. And the one about street
harassment - funny, rocking, perfectly said." Jane Fonda
performed that song? Really? I watched the slide show of Bev's
tune "We Were There" celebrating women workers in
history, and I cried. It was beautiful. We
Were There! Video
After a while I began
taking the subway out to Brooklyn to visit with Bev and swap
songs. Turns out we were both child performers, although at
slightly different times and on opposite coasts, and we both
subsequently toured around in bands (Bev's was The Human Condition,
mine the Ina May Wool Band). She keeps surprising me with stories
from her life and with songs she's written that I've never heard
before
Fast
forward: Bev and I have been trying out harmonies and arrangements
and helping each other finish new tunes. Since our first gig
in February of this year in Brooklyn, we've played a bunch of
shows and had a whole lot of fun, with old and new friends --
Sloan Wainwright, Rob Morsberger, Jon Herington, James Durst,
Ann Klein, and Honor Finnegan, to name a few. Most recently
we played for the New York State Nurse's Association at their
conference in Niagara Falls. Now we're in the middle of recording
the first ever Wool&Grant recording, co-produced with Daniel
A. Weiss.
Hope
you can join us some time soon to celebrate music and life.
We'll be at the Postcrypt in New York City on the 21st and up
in Massachusetts on a mini-tour on the 28th and 29th. Read on
for details. Like us on Facebook ,if you like: Wool&Grant/Facebook
page. You can listen to some of our music on ReverbNation:Reverbnation/Wool&Grant.
The website, WoolGrant.com, is coming in the not too distant
future, and so is that debut recording.
Quote of the month:
"We did some preliminary mastering work for "Wool
& Grant" a duo project of singer/songwriters Ina
May Wool and Bev Grant. Produced and engineered
by Daniel A. Weiss and featuring some heavy sidemen,
including bassist Tony Levin, the songs and production
have the simplicity, heart and power of masters doing what they
do best. We're looking forward to finishing this one!"
- Jon Gordon, producer/guitarist (Suzanne Vega, Madonna, many
others)

Postcrypt Coffeehouse/NYC/Friday, October 21
I've
been playing the Postcrypt since I was kneehigh to a pteradactyl,
and my 8x10 is still up on the wall from way back. It would
be great if you could join us for the first Wool&Grant show
at this venerable venue with ambiance like no other. Our friend
Chris Fuller( Chris's

for two sets. This will quite likely be my debut on mandolin
and the Wool&Grant debut of some brand new stuff we're excited
to play for you.
The
Postcrypt is located in the basement of St. Paul's Chapel on
the Columbia University Campus
Chris Fuller at 8:30
